Relative of someone suffering from depression

Perhaps one of the most difficult situations for a relative is to be with someone who is suffering from depression.

The depressed person is unable to find consolation easily and his relatives and friends feel frustrated every time they try to get even smile out of him.

If you, as a relative or friend can understand what is going on with the depressive patient, then
you can not only help him, but also you will no longer feel frustrated.

When someone suffers from a physical illness and has to stay in bed and take pills, we understand what happens to him immediately. We don't demand him to get up. We take care of him, we understand him and we keep him company until he is sane again.
We also know that the person who suffers from a physical illness has his body
affected. On the contrary in the case of depression and every other mental diseases, the mind's system is affected and there is not a spare brain that enables to interpret life the way out.

We don't see the depressed patient with a thermometer next to his bed, but he is not able to do what he used to, he is limited like any other patient with physical problems, he can't walk, he
can't feel well, and he can't find the way to get through it.

We feel that he doesn't appreciate us, that our love is not enough to him,
that our company is useless. It is the same whether we are or not, and sometimes
we feel that when we are with him, we bother him.

Every support we give him is smashed by phrases like:

  • You don't understand me
  • It is not as simple as you see it
  • Everything I have does not make me feel well
  • Nothing helps me
  • Even if it is a beautiful day, I don't feel like leaving my bed.
